Visit to the Caldara of Manziana
The Caldara di Manziana Tour is a natural area within the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Natural Park, in the municipality of Manziana, in the province of Rome. The territory of Manziana and Canale Monterano was dedicated by the Etruscans to the god of the underworld, Manth (in Latin, Mantus). This is the name of the Silva Mantiana, a vast wooded area overlooking the hills west of Lake Bracciano, of which the nearby Bosco Macchia Grande is the only surviving section. The association between the woods and the god of the underworld, Manth, likely stems from the forest's dark, impenetrable appearance and the widespread presence of pools of sulfurous water, anciently believed to be the entrance to the underworld. It is located in a circular depression, likely a small crater (caldera, hence the name), current evidence of the ancient presence of the Sabatino volcano, which 600,000 years ago occupied the entire rift valley between the Tolfa Mountains and Mount Soratte. Within the Caldara, three distinct natural environments can be identified: the sulfurous marsh; the birch grove; the marsh.
