Camping packing list: tent camping gear

In this section we cover everything you need for your camping adventure with a tent.

For a better overview, a compact checklist is best. You can also download the complete tent holiday packing list here as a PDF.

Part 1 of the tent holiday packing list: basic tent equipment

  • Tent

Choose a tent that is big enough for all travelers and their luggage. Pay attention to weatherproofing and ventilation options. Depending on where your holiday takes you and what the temperatures there are, you should choose a tent with suitable insulation.

  • Tent groundsheet

A tent groundsheet prevents moisture from seeping through the tent floor from the ground. It also provides an extra insulating layer between the tent and the ground, which reduces cold transfer from the ground. Another benefit is that the tent groundsheet protects the tent floor from abrasion, sharp objects like stones or branches, and general wear and tear. This extends the life of the tent.

  • Spare tent cord

If one of the guy lines on your tent tears, wears out, or gets lost, it's important to have a spare tent cord with you. Sometimes small cords on the tent frame also come loose. A spare cord allows for quick repairs. A spare tent cord can also help you spare tent cord to help you in strong winds secure the tent more firmly on the campsite. You can also repurpose the spare tent cord as a clotheslineor for improvising a sun shade.

  • Sleeping bag

Depending on the season and climate you need a suitable sleeping bag. Some are designed for sub-zero temperatures, others for warmer nights. Pay attention to the temperature ratings!

  • Foam mat / sleeping pad or air mattress

Depending on preference and space in your backpack, you should have either a sleeping pad or an air mattress on the packing list for your camping holiday .Sleeping pads provide excellent insulation against the cold of the ground, as they contain less air and use materials like foam that retain heat better. However, they are often harderand thinner than air mattresses and therefore less comfortable. Also, foam mats less compressible than air mattresses.

  • Pillow

An inflatable pillow can make the difference between a good night and a restless one. There are also compressible travel pillows.

  • Tarp / Groundsheet

This can be used as additional protection against rain or dew over the tent , or as a groundsheet underneath.

  • Tent lamp / Lantern

A hanging tent lamp or lantern is very practical for creating a cosy atmosphere in the evening.

  • Multitool

A good multitool can be invaluable when you need to repair something or when preparing meals.

  • Tent repair kit

If your tent gets a hole or a tent pole breaks, a repair kit very handy.

These are the basics of your camping gear for tent camping.

Of course, additional items can add more comfort to your camping holiday.
